Abstract

In the present work the magnetic and electronic structure of 2Fe/Pd and 2Pd/Fe multilayers are analyzed by means of the linear muffin-tin orbital method (LMTO). The calculations were carried out for several lattice parameters in order to obtain the total energy as a function of the volume. At the theoretical equilibrium volume, we found a high magnetic moment at Fe sites for 2Pd/Fe (μFe∼3.0μB) and 2Fe/Pd (μFe∼2.7μB) multilayers. The analysis of the density of states at equilibrium gives a good understanding of the behavior of the 2Fe/Pd and 2Pd/Fe magnetization. The hyperfine field at iron nuclei is near −39.0T for 2Pd/Fe multilayer and has a lower value (−21.0T) for 2Fe/Pd system.The results for the magnetic moments and hyperfine parameters at different lattice spacing show a strong dependence of the magnetic properties of the 2Fe/Pd system with pressure.
